Has the lock down got you snacking more? Or are you leaning towards the healthier side? Either way, this is a recipe that will definitely work for you.

Neither of us is a big fan of packaged biscuits and prefer wholesome cookies instead. But such cookies not only cost a lot and are usually sold per piece, but they are also packed with white flour and sugars. This recipe is the perfect alternative. Think of it as a gourmet, digestive cookie.

Replacing regular flour with Ragi flour makes a lot of difference. Ragi (finger millet) is highly nutritional and is a super food. It is packed with calcium, iron and fiber. Since it keeps you feeling full for longer, and reduces food cravings, it also helps in controlling intake of junk food. Plus, it is gluten-free.

Eggs are replaced with apple or soft pear sauce. Refined sugar is replaced with Jaggery powder and brown sugar.

The texture of the cookie is a soft, chewy one. It is a decadent start to your day and combines really well with your morning coffee.

That being said…

Let’s Get Baking!!


Makes: 6-8 Cookies


Ragi Flour: 130 gms
Cocoa Powder: 30 gms
Baking Powder: 1/2 tsp
Salt: 1/2 tsp
Apple sauce/Pear sauce: 70 gms
Unsalted Butter: 90 gms
Jaggery Powder: 60 gms
Brown Sugar: 60 gms
Nuts/Choco Chips to top


Measure and sieve ragi flour, cocoa flour, baking powder and salt into a bowl and mix until combined.

In another bowl, whisk the caster sugar, brown sugar and butter together until it is light and fluffy. Add apple/pear sauce to this mixture.
(For apple/pear sauce, cook a ripened apple/pear in a pan until soft. Once cooked, make a pulp.)

Add the dry mixture into the wet mixture in parts and fold gently until fully combined. Fold in the chocolate chips.

Line a baking tray with baking paper, spread the cookie dough, cover and refrigerate for 20 mins.

Once you remove it from the fridge, grease your palms and make equal sized dough balls of about 50 gms each. Press it flat onto the baking tray to about half an inch thickness.

Pre-heat the oven to 170°C and bake for 12-15 mins. In a convection oven, it may take about 15-20 mins, depending on the make of your oven.

Cool it completely before storing in air tight jars.

There you go, enjoy guilt-free, healthy, soft, chewy, decadent, cookies.
